Research Projects

Research is at the heart of everything we do.

Through research, we better understand the mental health challenges the screen industry faces, so we can design effective programs and initiatives to address them.

Screen Well collaborates with universities, independent consultants and industry stakeholders on a range of research initiatives.

Screen Industry alcohol consumption study

Screen Well have partnered with researchers from the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne to explore the extent and impact of alcohol use in the screen industry. More than a research project, the study has an in-built intervention to help reduce alcohol consumption.

Leadership Matters Report

Bullying, discrimination, harassment, and destructive work conditions have all emerged as central themes of recent screen industry reports, leading to calls for cultural change. While the impacts on mental health and wellbeing have been reported in the past, this new report Leadership Matters goes a step further by examining the impact on creative and commercial outcomes, as well as detailing how leaders can play a pivotal role in improving these outcomes and the long-term sustainability of the industry.

Screen Well are proud supporters of Griffith University’s ground-breaking research, the Australian Screen Industry Health & Wellbeing survey, that is currently capturing data on the mental health and wellbeing of both screen professionals and screen students in the Australian Screen Sector.

This research initiated by the Queensland Screen Collective is vital as it will be the first to capture comprehensive Australian screen industry specific mental health and wellbeing data, that will give sector stakeholders a more detailed picture of the depth and breadth of challenges the industry faces, upon which a more robust framework can be built to create healthier screen workplaces.

Long unpredictable work hours, feeling burnt out or fatigued from work, dissatisfied with the amount of time and energy outside of work to pursue fitness, leisure activities and hobbies, difficulties fulfilling caring responsibilities, and difficulties maintaining social connections and relationships - are some of the challenges Australian screen directors must face in order to maintain a healthy work/life balance.

This survey was conducted by Screen Well, in association with the Australian Directors’ Guild.

We would like to thank Emeritus Professor Adrian Fisher and Dr Michaela Pascoe for providing pro bono research consultancy to this project.
